Discus River is a boutique hatchery located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
I am a professional biologist specializing in breeding discus. I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Biology, a Master’s of Science degree in Wildlife Management and a PhD in resource optimization from the University of Alberta in Canada.
Breeding discus in my passion. My fascination with fish in general started when I was in kindergarten and when my father, on my request, started my first fish tank. I have been in the aquarium hobby since then. I was always tempted by discus because I wanted to experience the unique way parent discus provide to their young by feeding them with a secretion of their skin.
After breeding livebearers, cichlids and a variety of labirynth fishes, I decided to try with discus. I quickly learned that breeding discus is a challenge incomparable to breeding any other freshwater fish. In a way discus breeding is the Mount Everest of the freshwater aquarium. Every new brood is another climb and there is no room for error.
